I started learning karate at the very late age of 59, and during a visit to attend in July 2016, a Budosai in Naha , I came in contact with Kyudo....the beauty , elegance , and refinement attracted my immediate attention....something unnamed open in me...and I knew...this is a path I would walk for the rest of my life.Sakiyama Sensei, 72 years old and teaching for more than 50 years introduced me with a set of some 10 lessons over a three week period, which ended in shooting to the target....my life will never be the sameI secured all my requirements in Tokyo , and returned home in August, to our sleepy seaside village...Hermanus, some 2 hours east of Cape TownI immediately constructed a shooting range at my home, where I also have my small private karate DojoOnce one embarks on a journey, doors open, and I was introduced to a young teacher in far away Johannesburg,I spend 3 days with my new teacher, a remarkable young man, 4DAN , and a most beautiful Kyudo DojoI study hard, read everything I lay my hands on, which included this very important work on Zen and Archery...indispensable insightI train daily, karate, Kubudo and now Kyudo....this is true retirement.
The idea and thought is wonderful - for anyone curious about beyond what it is immediately presented as daily life. But the translation is horrible - for such a small book, the precise and succinct wording is of utter importance - the translation failed to do that and more. The book in itself is worthy the while - you just have to bear through the layered and often erroneous text to get to the jewel.
This is a beautiful older book, written in the 1950's about a scholar's experience learning archery from a Zen master. It is a beautifully written book, and documents the scholar's growing understanding of a philosophy that can not be taught in words, but only through experience. I am a beginning archer, and I found the book very beautiful. It reminded me how the learning is all part of the experience. If you like this book, take a look at Zen archery masters on You tube; it's almost supernatural.
If you have any pursuits leaning towards the practice and improvement of physical activities... sports, martial arts, archery or a multitude of other things you should read this book. It is not just about the authors experience in Japan but how our minds can so effectively be trained just like our bodies can be to perform at high level. Like Morpheus speaks of Neo "There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path". This is very quick read that is both insightful and practical in aligning what you know you can do and doing it every time it needs to be done.
It's a good book but be a good reader. The prose is in the style of mid century European. Add to that the difficulty in understanding some of the dialog between the two main characters. However if you can get through it then you'll have great insight into Zen, one of the elements of the Buddhists eight fold path. And when you are done you can ponder how a man like Herrigel, so passionate about a basic tenet of Buddhist thought, could end up a devoted Nazi. Buy it.
This short book can be a tough read at times, but I was expecting it. I finished in one day while commuting, so not difficult to follow, but it required some reflection at times.Really enjoyed it.
This is indisputably one of the great Zen books. I mean, there is always Suzuki, Watts and a bunch of other guys worth reading (among which I would NOT include Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance, and not forgetting poor old Siddhartha, but Herrigel's book is sort of the bar, the standard of excellence, for anybody writing about the fascinating world of Zen. I have recommended it and even required it of some students. Even though I don't maintain an avid interest in Zen anymore, I still re-read this book every couple years or so. What better person to explore, experience and explain the weird world ofZen than a tight-ass German professor who turns out to be utterly charming and self-effacing as he bumbles through this adventure. Be sure to read Ambivalent Zen if you think egolessness and sitting cross-legged for long hours painfully saying funny vowel sounds is going to make you happier.
Whatever your spiritual beliefs, this book prompts a new, refreshing approach who work and life. I have added it to my teaching curriculum for businessmen.
