I read this book with some satisfaction and a little reservation.It is not accurate in every instance-I wonder which book is,but again it does contain some very solid observations and is a virtual library on how early Seventh Day Adventists thought about the nature of Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity.It will be shocking to the unread S.D.A. that the pioneers,including Ellen White for some point at least,never believed in the doctrine of the Trinity.In fact,Ellen White's later trinitarian statements seemed to have come from extensive reading of other writers' works and not from her study of the Bible or from revelations from God.This in my view brings into question her claims to prophetic inspiration.Indeed what Ellen White said about Jesus in her early writings such as Spiritual Gifts vols 1 and 2 Spirit of Prophecy vol 1 could not have been inspired by God as the data are not in suport of the teachings of the Bible.Well every reader must consider the evidence and come to his own conclusion.I thank the authour for writing the book,but I think it was hastily written in some parts.But it is a great read nevertheless.

This book written by Elmer Wiebe is heavily documented with quotations from various Adventist authors, and demonstrates total confusion about Who Jesus is, and what the Trinity is (many of them being Arians rather than trinitarians), if they accept the idea at all. He starts with a short history of the dialogues between Walter Martin The Kingdom of the Cults/Limited and certain modern Adventist leaders, which resulted in the publication of the book Seventh-day Adventists Believe, and the book Questions on Doctrine. The leaders persuaded Martin that Adventism is an orthodox Christian faith, by embracing the concept of the Trinity in a rather back-handed way, and consequently, Martin gave them a clean bill of health with respect to adhering to accepted Christian doctrine. The only problem is, it was all a sham. And sadly, the writers of these books did not reject the Investigative Judgment, which is also unbiblical. Jesus doesn't have to examine the records. Being God, He KNOWS who is written in the book of life.There are currently two different groups in Adventism, each adhering to a perspective which is somewhat different from that of the other. There are the Traditionalists, who pretty much follow Ellen G. White verbatim, and make no attempt to understand the nature of salvation, and then there are the Evangelicals, who have adopted a few ideas from Christian evangelicals, but who still adhere to White. Unfortunately, they're not willing to give up on White. The result is that she continues to mislead with her teachings.The book suffers a little bit from some sloppy organization (because of which I deducted a star). It is not always possible to tell when a given passage is a quote from an SDA authority, and when it is the author explaining something. For the most part, it is clear, but read carefully. It is also a bit difficult to read ALL that material that he supplied, but in my opinion, it is necessary. The false doctrines regarding the nature of God need to be exposed and everyone needs a thorough understanding of these, which is especially true since at least one Adventist told me that SDA adheres to the Apostles Creed (which is quite incorrect).To digress for a moment with some background, I'll make note of the fact that I studied SDA deeply because family members were involved. I learned that the diet White advocates leads to serious malnutrition and disease, and I saw this for myself. I also learned that it is a religion based on works, and the major work is keeping the Sabbath on Saturday (and criticizing everyone who doesn't, contrary to Paul's instructions in the book of Galatians). The diet is also very important to most. White taught that if a person dies with meat in his stomach, he is condemned. Ironically, because the human body craves meat (because God COMMANDED Noah and his descendants to eat meat), some canning companies use monosodium glutimate to help simulate the flavor of meat. MSG is a deadly neurotoxin. Had White been getting her information from God, He would have guided her in a very different direction. White actually claimed that her voluminous writings came directly from God, when in fact, she copied large quantities of material from other human authors, along with their mistakes of all kinds. Her most famous book is The Great Controversy. Like other books she allegedly wrote, large portions of it were plagiarized from other authors, while she claims that her writings came directly from God. This is discussed in a book called The White Lie by Walter Rea. White Lie I personally checked 75% of his comparison quote and found them to be dead, cold accurate. If you become at all attuned to her writing, it is easy to pick out the portions she added to the plagiarized material. She had a fixation on satan, and often wrote about him in those interpolated sections. The writing is very dark. I finally had all I could take, and stopped about 2/3 of the way through the book.Back to Wiebe's book... The next section discussed the SDA perspective on the Trinity. It contains numerous quotes. Many of these contradict each other. And in fact, White herself contradicts herself. While William Miller, whose interpretations of prophecy set three separate dates for Christ's return to earth (all of them wrong, for which he later repented), was actually a believer in the Trinity, this did not rub off on SDA authorities. Some held that only God the Father was God, and that Jesus was His first creation. Some actually stated that if Jesus were God, the "God" part of Him could not die, so only the human part could. For reasons which are totally unclear to me, some of these authorities held that had Jesus been God, His death could not have atoned for our sins. Still others were willing to admit that both God the Father and Jesus were persons, while the Holy Spirit was just a force of some kind (mirroring the perspective of the Worldwide Church of God, which rose from the same roots as SDA). This section is pretty exhaustive in its documentation.The idea that Jesus had a sin nature is also discussed. Ellen G. White argued on both sides of this question. In order to be tempted in all ways as we are, it is held that Jesus had to have a sin nature. I had a telling experience with an SDA member. I started by pointing out that White said Jesus had a sin nature (I didn't mention that she said elsewhere that He did not). I asked her if she agreed with that. She said she did. When I pointed out that Jesus was the spotless Lamb of God, without sin, she refused to discuss it further. Wiebe documents that White wasn't the only SDA authority who sometimes argued that Jesus had a sin nature. In addition, White and others claimed that Jesus was really the archangel Michael.If you are considering joining the Seventh-day Adventist church, please read this book! SDA causes a pall of spiritual and emotional darkness to hover over a person. It is very oppressive. Be forewarned, and don't get involved. Read other books about the problems as well.

I recently acquired a copy of Who is the Adventist Jesus by Evangelical writer and researcher Elmer Wiebe. I thought it would be interesting to get his assessment of Adventism and its view of Jesus.Wiebe speaks as a creedal Protestant and provides a perfect litmus test for how a "real Trinitarian" looks at Adventism. His analysis is quite refreshing when dealing with Adventist efforts to convince the world that we are true Trinitarians. His commentary is naturally damning considering his position as a Protestant Trinitarian.It is evident that Wiebe has received plenty of inside Adventist information. The forward is written by a former knowledgeable Adventist and this has allowed Wiebe to access a lot of information. He quotes all our pioneers from many sources as well as current Adventist literature.There were two main areas of interest to me as an Adventist and former minister; his assessment of Froom and Andersen's deception practised on Martin and Barnhouse (See page 50 onwards) and his assessment of Ellen White.Wiebe makes this penetrating statement on page 161 onwards as to the churches claim that Ellen White became a Trinitarian. His charge against her of denying the full diety of Jesus is natural considering his starting point. Note carefully what he says:With the evidence of at least ten different prominent Seventh-day Adventist leaders, we see by looking at their quotes that they were not in agreement with addressing God as the Triune God. All the early Adventists either had an Arian or semi-Arian view of God where Jesus was either created or at the least, didn't have the same nature as God the Father. It is interesting that Ellen G. White referred to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as being the three great powers, the heavenly trio. In the worse case, this could be under- stood a tritheism view of the Godhead, but at best, leaving the interpretation open to all kinds of views of the Godhead with this sloppy language. Unlike the Seventh-day Adventist Church today, she did not believe that persons meant exactly the same as beings. The term being referred exclusively to the Father and the Son who were personal beings. According to the first chapter of "Why Was Sin Permitted?" in Patriarchs and Prophets, the third highest being in heaven before the entrance of sin, was Lucifer. How can one ever believe Ellen was a trinitarian, when history so clearly declares that her husband and all the pioneers of the SDA Church were semi-Arian? She was married to her husband for thirty-five years and never once did she rebuke him for his belief. Never once did she ever teach against the semi-Arian doctrine. In fact, she never used the term Trinity, and she taught decidedly against it. As a matter of fact, when you look at the language that Ellen G. White and other Adventists used, it would be fairly safe to say that the Adventist movement didn't become trinitarians in 1896, but rather tritheistic in their view of the Godhead. While the modern Seventh-day Adventists claim to hold to a trinitarian view point of the Godhead, they have not resolved the issues of heresy set forth by their predecessors in the Adventist movement of the tritheism heresy. We know that Ellen White didn't believe in or teach the Trinity because: 1. In 10,000 manuscripts; 100,000 pages; 25 million words about theological issues, she never once used the word "Trinity" to describe her view of the Godhead. 2. In her writings, while she copied profusely from hundreds of theological writers, many of whom were trinitarian, in some cases word for word, page for page; yet she never included the word Trinity which those she copied from had occasion for the word. 3. She had scores of Arian references to Jesus as the Son of God before or at original creation, or as lesser deity from the Father. 4. She had hundreds-if not more-references to the Godhead, yet never used the word Trinity to describe the Christian God. 5. There are scores of references to the three persons, or powers, etc. of the Godhead, yet never the word Trinity to describe the three. 6. In her seventy years of prophetic ministry, with scores of SDA leaders who publicly spoke and wrote against the Trinity, whose words she publicly endorsed, she never once corrected their false anti-trinitarian views in favour of the triune God. 7. However, she does have a blatant statement against all other fallen Babylonish Protestant and Catholic churches that "All their prayers and professions are an abomination to God" whereby she has condemned the profession of the Trinity, which is one of the primary confessions of the historic Christian Faith.From the above, no other conclusion can be drawn than that Ellen G. White did not believe in or uphold or teach the full deity of Jesus Christ and the Triune God.[1]His points about Adventism fostering Arianism and anti-trinitarianism is misguided and incorrect and his claim about Adventists promoting the Clear Word as an Adventist Bible is dead wrong at least in my part of the Adventist Community.The question must be asked, why is it so easy for Wiebe to see what many of us are seeing in the writings of the pioneers, Ellen White and even Froom and Andersen. Why does Wiebe see like some of us that a big (possibly unwitting) deception is being practiced leaving many people wondering who the Adventist Jesus is anyway?
