Besides being quite the colorful character, Michael Sherer is an endless font of valuable information about all kinds of things that might plague the traveler when they are in Antigua. I was certainly not a stranger to Guatemala and my previous 5 trips had been completely uneventful. But the adventure of the giant kite festival proved to be a rather unpleasant experience after my fabric handbag has been sliced and my passport and local currency stolen. Of course, it was a Sunday, and I was in quite the panic of what to do and how to get a new passport in the three days I had before my scheduled departure. I referred to Michael's book and found all the information I needed about where to report the theft, how to tackle the embassy, and where to go in Antigua to get passport photos and the other necessary documentation I would need. thankfully, I had also taken his advice about using Guinness Travel, and the owner, Carlos Armas, made sure that I was properly escorted to the embassy while the driver waited for me until i had emergency passport in hand. Somewhere in this process, I also sent Michael a frantic email, to which he responded almost immediately and kept him apprised of the entire process of replacing the passport and then dealing with immigration on my departure. It seems that la migra's computers are not up to date, so when I tried to leave the country without the proper entry stamp, a search of their computer records showed that I hadn't even left the country on my previous trip 5 months earlier and therefore was technically 150 days over my visa, for which they fined me $150!. I was really most grateful for his insight and kindness in what could have been a really stressful situation. "Our Man in Antigua" is my go-to reference for anything I need to know during my frequent visits to Antigua. He hasn't been wrong on anything yet!

I am a long-time resident of Antigua, which is, by the way, one of the world's great towns. I know our pueblo well, or thought I did until I read Michael's book. I was impressed with his research, accuracy, and awareness of so much here that I didn't know about. Useful, interesting and well-written in a lively writing style that had me finish the book in one reading. If you are coming to visit, this book will definitely make your trip more enriching. If you live here, read it and you will probably be surprised by how you don't know. And if you live here and have guests visit, stick this book in their hands and you have done all you need to do to insure they have a great visit.
With this book Michael proves that he knows Antigua better than anybody else. I can confirm that whatever is written in the book is as far as I know it, exactly how Michel is describing it.This book is a " Must read " for everybody who wants to stay longer than just a few Days. I have known for months that I would be traveling to Guatemala and I also have been reading for months about the perils that await there. I've read about the unsolved crimes against American citizens and to be perhaps more than honest, I've been stressed out of my mind. Then I stumbled upon a link to this book on the Guatemala Times English news website [...]. His frankness and honesty was refreshing. All those months of stress mostly vanished after reading the short and lighthearted but highly informative book about what to do and who to see. His continuously updated blog ([...]) is a reminder that life does happen, even in Antigua, but that an educated eye and perceptive attitude keeps most of the worst parts of life from happening to you, even while traveling abroad. Best travel book I have ever read (previously traveled other parts of USA and Argentina).
After visiting Antigua, Guatemala, on a brief shore excursion, I can say that the author packs a lot of practical information about sights and amenities into his handy guidebook.
This is a great guide for anyone visiting Antigua, Guatemala. Full of highly opinionated insight from one who lives there. If you've only a few days in Antigua, get this for expert recommendations on where to go, where to eat, where to stay, etc. I wish I had had this guide when I spent a month in Antigua a couple of years back--I did pretty well, but I see now that I missed a lot of great stuff. Oh well, I'll just have to start making a list for my next trip.
