About the Author
Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini was born in Turin, Italy. A Jesuit and bible scholar of international fame, he was the archbishop of Milan from 1980 to 2002 and became a cardinal in 1983. He has written more than forty books, and has championed a revival of the ancient practice of lectio divina, or spiritual reading of Scripture, using it as a pastoral tool in his archdiocese and in his books.

My God bless Cardinal Martini - he passed away on Friday, August 31, 2012 at Aloisianum, a Jesuit institute in Gallarte, Varese province,Italy. His funeral will be Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Catherdral of Milan Italy. Approximately August 8, 2012, he gave his a finalinterview to reporters from Corriere della Sera, an Italian paper. In it he was quoted "[European and American] culture has aged, ourchurches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our rituals and our cassocks are pompous. ... The Church has remained 200years behind the times. Why has it not been shaken up? Are we scared? Fear instead of courage?". He will be buried in his spiritual home,Jerusalem, Israel. He was a brave and courageous spiritual leader and his writings will have a very long impact on our lives.
Both sensitive and scholarly. Martini is my favorite Pauline exegete.
This book helps one not only to understand Paul and his teaching of Jesus for the betterment of mankind but also the book helps those who read it understand themselves in terms of Paul's teachings.
A helpful resource into the writings of the "Apostle to the Gentiles." Useful as an introduction.
This short book by Cardinal Martini gives a great analysis that brings to life both Saint Paul's conversion and evangelization struggles and through specific verses of Paul's major letters, an explanation of the evangelization problems he faced and how he dealt with them. The selected verses provide good meditative examples, explaining Paul's intent and specific teachings to correct the problems arising in the formation of these new church communities. A great examination of the problems that faced the growth and evolution of the new church with explanations and reflections that are highly relevant today.
The collection of talks were written for monthly gatherings of young adults when Cardinal Martini was in Milan. It is an excellent starting point for further reflection and meditation on the figure of Saint Paul and his written legacy to the Church. You can tell that Cardinal Martini is not simply presenting a "paper" on Saint Paul, but is guiding the listener into prayer with him. I plan on using this resource as an introduction to Bible study on St Paul for young adults.
Cardinal Martini has provided a special meditation on St. Paul especially useful for the Holy Year dedicated to St. Paul. I have enjoyed many of Cardinal Martini's books over the years.
