Review
“The perfect blend of biblical scholarship and heartfelt passion, Guthrie guides us through Genesis, helping us discover for ourselves God’s magnificent plan of redemption. Her steps are sure, and her grasp of the Scriptures is breathtaking. Above all, God’s unfailing love, grace, and sovereignty shine forth from every page. A brilliant start to a very promising series.â€â€•Liz Curtis Higgs, New York Times bestselling author, Mine is the Night and Bad Girls of the Bible“An excellent resource for the church. Nancy explains biblical connections in a way that will be helpful to new believers as well as those steeped in the faith. I wish I had these resources years ago.â€â€•Wendy Horger Alsup, mother; author, Practical Theology for Women and The Gospel-Centered Woman“The Bible is a book about Jesus. The disciples walking to Emmaus after the resurrection discovered this as Christ himself walked along with them and explained how the Old Testament pointed to the Savior. This book is the first in an important series by Nancy Guthrie and it spotlights how Jesus can be seen in the book of Genesis. I recommend this―and the entire series―to you.â€â€•Alistair Begg, Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio“It’s not hyperbole to say, ‘It’s about time.’ While there are good books out there telling pastors how to preach Christ from all the Scriptures, there have been very few Bible studies for laypeople―especially for women―along these lines. Nancy Guthrie does an amazing job of helping us to fit the pieces of the biblical puzzle together, with Christ at the center.â€â€•Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California; author, Justification (New Studies in Dogmatics)“Nancy takes us by the hand and the heart on an exegetical excursion to see Christ in the Old Testament…the beauty of Guthrie’s writing is that you are certain she has met him there first.â€â€•Jean F. Larroux, Senior Pastor, Southwood Presbyterian Church, PCA, Huntsville, Alabama“Every leader of small group ministries knows the difficult task of finding good material―material that causes participants to think carefully while striking a chord in the heart; material that challenges the mature Christian, while gently leading those younger in the faith into deeper truths; material that digs into the Bible and applies its treasures to our everyday lives. The Promised One manages to do it all! A meaningful, 10-week Bible study with thought-provoking questions and solid teaching, and a peek at what is still to come. I am delighted to offer this to the women in my church and look forward to the remaining books in this series.â€â€•Jean Bronson, Director of Women’s Ministries, Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, Missouri“An excellent resource for the church. Nancy explains biblical connections in a way that will be helpful to new believers as well as those steeped in the faith. I wish I had these resources years ago.â€â€•Wendy Horger Alsup, mother; author, Practical Theology for Women and The Gospel-Centered Woman“There are many great Christian books, but not many great Bible studies. Nancy is a master of getting the Word of God into the mouths, hearts, and lives of her students. I cannot wait to share this study with my people.â€â€•Donna Dobbs, Christian Education Director, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi“How many of us have grown up in the church, learning and reciting one Bible story after the other? But how many of us can clearly connect those stories with clarity and understanding of the grand drama? The Promised One will lead this generation to clearly recognize that the Bible is God’s purposeful story―an amazing unfolding of His promised provision through Jesus, His Son, for the redemption of our wrecked and ruined world. Through this life-changing study, you will clearly comprehend God’s intent and promise of Jesus from the very first pages of the Bible through to the very end. I pray your eyes and mind will joyfully recognize Him as the Promised One, making your heart burn with a deeper and more passionate love for the Savior!â€â€•Jennifer Adamson, Director of Women’s Ministries, First Baptist Orlando, Orlando, Florida“Do you ever wish you could have listened to the conversation Jesus had with his friends on the road to Emmaus? Luke tells us that Jesus started with Moses and walked his way through the Bible and explained to them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures. Nancy has done us all a great service by carefully and precisely unpacking the teachings regarding our Savior in the Old Testament. My experience with this book has been rich and has deepened my love for the Word and for Jesus. I am in debt to my sister for this treasure of a study!â€â€•David Arthur, Executive Vice President, Precept Ministries International; coauthor, Desiring God’s Own Heart: A Study on Samuel“After nearly a decade of serving women in the church, I have to say that finding Bible study curriculum that compels women to fall in love with God’s Word is perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of this job. Promotions for women’s materials fill my mailbox and my inbox daily, yet rarely have I found a curriculum so well written. The Promised One is full of truth, humility, and grace. Nancy leads us to the Scriptures where we find there to be one story, that of our Lord Jesus. I am so grateful for this series and I am certain it will help women come to know Christ and know Him better.â€â€•Kari Stainback, Director of Women’s Ministries, Park Cities Presbyterian Church, Dallas, Texas“Is there a need for another study guide on Genesis? In a word, yes. And this is the book. Sadly, most studies are not Christ-centered, but rather principle-centered, which becomes nothing more than a new version of legalism. Nancy Guthrie sets a new standard by being truly Christ-centered, starting with Jesus’ fulfillment of the entire Old Testament and maintaining that focus throughout the guide. Having read three of her previous books, and the Christ-centered nature of them, I expected the same top-notch quality. I was not disappointed. The proven format of personal study, teaching chapter, and group discussion highlights Christ as the center of Genesis. Her questions are not merely ‘how-to’ guides, but they bring a fresh perspective and point the reader continually to Christ. Do you want to study or teach Genesis? Then this book is for you. Guthrie has provided a valuable resource of the church.â€â€•Richard P. Shields, President, American Lutheran Theological Seminary“Because the stories of Genesis are so familiar to many, it can be easy to think we don’t need to study it again. But The Promised One enables us to read all of the familiar stories with fresh eyes so that God’s redemptive purposes through Christ from the very beginning become clear. I look forward to putting this study in the hands of the women at my church!â€â€•Julie Wesselman, Women’s Ministry Director, Desert Springs Church, Albuquerque, New Mexico“At last! Real living water from Scripture that enables us, together, to behold the Lord Jesus in His glory―this is what nourishes and matures the soul! The expositions in Genesis, the development in Scripture, the fulfillment in our Lord Jesus Christ, and then the bridge to application to now and to the blessings yet to come when all meets the final consummation in glory. So well done. O I pray Nancy’s book, as well as the series, ignites a fire that blazes from here to the Third World and strengthens all Christians everywhere to come alive in our testimony of Jesus.â€â€•Thaddeus Barnum, Senior Pastor, Church of the Apostles, Fairfield, Connecticut; author, Never Silent

The Promised One - Seeing Jesus is Genesis is part of the Seeing Jesus in The Old Testament 10-Week Bible Study Series. Nancy Guthrie takes 10 different points in Genesis and breaks them down into ten easy bible study lessons. Lessons include the creation of mankind to Noah's Ark, as well as the Tower of Babel and the sagas of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Each chapter is broken up into four parts: 1) personal bible study, 2) teaching chapter, 3) how Genesis points to what is to come and 4) discussion guide. There is plenty of scripture reference and workspace worked right into each chapter.I think this is a great Bible study resource and look forward to Ms. Guthrie's future chapter studies. The writing of each chapter makes it easy for Christians to follow the bible from the beginning and have a better understanding of its meaning.Chapter 5 is about the Tower of Babel, which has always been an interesting part of the New Testament. The author shows us in elementary terms how various nationalities came to be. The chapter discusses the people's plan to build the tower and the problems and issues that were associated with them. The author also compares verses and allows readers to see many Old Testament values, parables and foresights in the New Testament. This is a very valuable book and an asset to anyone's Christian Bible study and or/ Christian study collection. It is something that one can constantly refer to.
This is a wonderful bible study. Many women's bible studies are topical based on a women's issue or often men's and women's studies focus on application what the scripture means to me. Also many studies will jump around picking and choosing verses. This study does not do that at all. This study does just what the title says. It covers a section in a certain book of the Old testiment and has the reader dig deep into God's words. She does a great job pointing out how all scripture points to Christ and she teaches is how to find that ourselves instead of spoon feeding us. The questions asked are challenging and the answers are found in the passages just read. Also when she does jump to other scriptures they are often New Testiment ones that go right along with the Old Testiment passage that we are reading. We never have to worry that we will get a moralist message or a waterdown gospel. The sins of the Old testiment characters are made known, God's holiness is shown and Christ as the only hope is made known. The set up is you read the verses and or chapters, then answer questions at home and then go in meet with a group to watch the video and answer more group question out loud as a group. The only negative is the book has a section that you are to read after answering the questions, but the video is just about word for word of that. So I won't be reading and listening to the same thing I just skip the reading part. If your women do not have 2 hours to do this study I would say don't watch the video just stick with discussing the questions you did at home and the group questions.
If you are looking to study the Bible deeply then look no further. This book will help take you on a journey to learn more about Genesis than you ever thought possible. It is well written and everything is presented in a very easy to read fashion. My Bible study group was already on Exodus when I started attending it so I decided to do this on my own and I am truly enjoying the experience. God is my Bible study partner and who could possibly ask for a better partner?
I love Nancy Guthrie's books. I've studied the Bible for many years, yet found Nancy's writing very insightful. I could see more specifically than ever before how the Old Testament writings are fulfilled in the New Testament and the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Seeing Jesus foreshadowed in many of the popular Old Testament stories gave them much greater depth of meaning. I more fully appreciate that God's plan of redemption was not an after thought, but planned from the beginning of time. I definitely recommend the whole series.A good resource for understanding New Testament writings are Paul's Letters To The Early Church (Christian Living Bible Study Series) (Volume 1) and The Epistles of James, Peter, and Jude (Christian Living Bible Study Series) (Volume 2)
I ordered this book by Nancy Guthrie to use for personal Bible Study. I have not been disappointed. She beautifully explains how passages in the Old Testament point to Jesus. She links the Old Testament to corresponding New Testament passages, and points us to prophecies yet to be fulfilled by Jesus. This study is rich and comprehensive. If you want to go further with Jesus and be enthralled by His person, this is the study for you!
Our woman's group is using this book in our bible study. It is so rewarding. Nancy has a way of revealing Jesus in the OT that touches our heads and hearts. We are learning about the book of Genesis in a brand new perspective. We dig deep into what happened at the time and then follow the life of Christ right through Revelation. Some of us are long time bible students and some are just starting their first study. It works for all of us. We plan on continuing with Nancy's series
This is an accessible, insightful Bible study companion that aims to reveal the ways in which the book of Genesis points to Christ. Readers who have gleaned a lot from Edmund Clowney and Tim Keller's Christocentric approach to studying the Old Testament will very much appreciate Nancy Guthrie's teaching in this book. Beginning with the creation narrative and ending with the twelve sons of Jacob, Guthrie demonstrates how the stories of the patriarchs exist not just to tell us how to live but to reveal both our need for a savior and the nature of the One who will accomplish that redemption on our behalf. Conducive to both small group and individual Bible studies, this book strengthened both my knowledge of Genesis and my love for Jesus. Highly recommended.
