Haig does a great job of using dialogue to create crisp, distinct characters. If you like snappy dialog, you'll like this book. At times it seems like 85% or more of the book is people talking. This is a great inside-the-military suspense story. My only qualm is that sometimes the snappy give and take goes on a bit long, causing the book to bog down a bit. Toward the end I found myself skipping past some of the repartee just to move it along. I also found the resolution a touch predictable/anti-climatic. Still, the characters crackle and the protagonist is definitely unique and different from others in the genre. I'll definitely read the next in the series.

Retired for more than a decade, and wheelchair-bound, I spend a great deal of my time reading. By now I have established a list of favorite authors: Balducci, Child, Clancy, Deaver, and Sanford all can be expected to produce some great fiction. Seldom however, have I been unable to put down what I am reading to do something else. Surprisingly, when reading SECRET SANCTION, I found myself unable to turn off my Kindle for some other activity.Brian Haig, brings the reader a startlingly appealing character with his introduction of Sean Drummond, JAG lawyer extraordinary. Tasked with investigating the assassination of 35 Serbians by a Green Beret team, taking place in the grim land of Kosovo, there is a convergence of nefarious politics originating from the CIA, NSA, FBI, and the U.S. Army which has assigned him the task. He is given conflicting messages from his current boss, a four-star general, once his mentor, at the same time having to deal with internal moles, reporting to he knows not who. Throughout, he maintains a savage and biting sense of humor which constantly surprises the reader.

Patty LazzaraI have been searching for a new series and character to keep my interest. I have certainly found it. Major Drummond, working for Jag. Assigned to a case that no one wants to touch, he goes against the false testimonies, the cover up that goes to the White House, to do his job.Admirable? Perhaps. But really it's his nature to get to the truth, and the more falsehoods he comes across the more determined he becomes. All the while with wise ass comments and bluff. Not many are aware of his background and underestimate his capabilities.I have to say I was reminded of John Corey, from Nelson DeMille's series.Exciting, dangerous, serious and wise cracking from start to finish, I read it in two days and am off to buy the next book in the series. I recommend anyone interested in this genre to do the same!

I bought this audio book after reading all of the Amazon reviews. At the same time I ordered this book from Amazon I ordered his other 3 books after reading all of the reviews about them. I won't bother to rehash the plot line since so many reviewers have already done that. As suggested by several reviewers I will read them in the order that they were written. Even though the books are not a continuation of each other, it was suggested it was better to read them in order since some of the same characters return. I have to say that at first I thought the book would be boring in that I have absolutely no interest in the military. Turns out it was not the least bit boring and it was a great mystery that just happened to have a military plotline. I can't wait to listen to the second book (Mortal Allies) which I will start on my drive home tonight. I am always happy when I find a new writer to listen to. Since I listen to so many audio books it is imperative to point out that no matter how good the book is if the person reading the book isn't also very good the audio book turns into a dud. As soon as I started listening to John Rubinstein (the reader of this book) I realized I had heard this voice many times before and that he was one of my favorite readers. Then I realized he is the reader of a lot of Jonathan Kellerman's books. If you like audio books, another great "reader" is Joe Mantegna. He has been the "reader" of a lot of different authors including Elmore Leonard. They don't get any better than him.

JAG lawyer Sean Drummond is sent to Italy to investigate an atrocity done by a Green Barrett A Team in Kosovo. Drummond is facing and solving an operation of coverup and conspiracy backed up by the CIA, the US Army Chief of Staff, more generals and the DOD.This is my 9th Haig-Drummond suspense manuscript. So far I found all 9 to be extremely interesting and refreshing as well as non- repetitive or predictable. The only repetitive theme is that Sean always gets hammered physically and prevails at the end as a real conscientious layer and patriot despite his frequent statements along the the way confusing to his disbelief in these values.

This is the first of Brian Haig's books about legal matters in the US Army. Faced with another legal novel, I would normally yawn, but this story has two things going for it. First, the US Army's Judge Advocate General's office is not your usual law operation. The military has iis own rules, based on the Articles of War, so things run differently. Second, the protagonist, Major Sean Drummond, is a cocky, fast-talking lawyer, who sees the wry humor in military life. Of course, if you don't see the humor, you will likely become sorely depressed, because peacetime life in uniform is boring, and wartime life is terrifying. In the present tale, Major Drummond and two captains go to Bosnia to investigate charges that a Green Beret team ambushed and executed 35 Serbian soldiers, although the United States was at peace with Serbia. The Green Berets have devised a big cover-up, which Drummond detects immediately. But as he investigates further, the crime is not as clear-cut as it appears, and it extends all the way back to Washington, DC. The story unfolds nicely and should keep you entertained during those long waits in an airport terminal.
