This was a very difficult book for me. Fantasy is not my normal genre but I do love a good fantasy now and again. This is not a good one. I gave it two stars because I did finish it, but just barely. One star is reserved for books that I don't even finish. Fantasy world, with creatures and characters that are hard to connect with. Oligarchs of many colors. Blue, red, yellow, green, purple, black, gray, white..... and they all have specific powers given to them by their Loka, a stone of matching color. Some of them have names. Keeping the names and colors and powers straight becomes tedious and difficult, if not impossible. This book had to have been written just as things came to the authors mind. No outline, or plan. It rambles with a multitude of creatures and colors and landscapes and magic, with really no sense of rhyme or reason. I read a lot. I kept putting this book down and would do almost anything to keep from reading it, even watch TV. I finally made it through, with great perseverance. Even at the end, I didn't really like any of the characters. I didn't really care what happened to them. It just rambles on and takes you through all kinds of events and then it, finally, ends. I was glad for that part. I know Jay Bell is a good author. I truly loved Kamikaze Boys. I know there is a "Book 2" of this story but.... I'll not be reading it. I could barely get through this one.
I absolutely loved this book. When I first started it, I thought I would never finish. It just didn't work for me, but after the first couple of chapters, things changed and I was sucked it.I would categorize this as an adventure saga more than a romance. Yes, there is a little bit of romance, but the adventure is what makes up the story and why I loved the book. The story takes place on a world that is ruled by 10 Oligarchs. Oligarchs are individuals with power and magic and their power is notated by a particular color. Each Oligarch governs a specific portion of the world and they respectively have a loka (gem) that boost their power. The lokas are the same color as each Oligarch's magic. From what I gathered, anyone with magic abilities can be an Oligarch but not everyone has magic abilities. The story centers around Dylan, son of the Blue Oligarch. The Blue Oligarch has the power over water. Basically, Dylan is 17 and decides to go on a grand adventure before he has to get serious with his life. He and his talking cat, Kio, decide to steal a boat and go to an old friend's house, son of the Yellow Oligarch who has power over the winds. When he gets to the house, his friend is not there, but his father invites him to stay for the night. Later that night, Dylan witnesses a murder which eventually turns, not only his life, but his world upside down.Dylan’s is then thrust into an unwilling adventure across his world attempting to stop a mad man from stealing lokas and taking power. He is aided by Tyjinn, the 19 year old Red Oligarch with power over fire, and Leli, who is also in her late teens. The adventure was fun and entertaining. There were also beautiful drawings at the beginning of each chapter. All the characters were well developed. Dylan made many mistakes, but he is 17 and insecure about his abilities and frankly scared about what is happening around him. Tyjinn, is a power wizard but is haunted by his past. Dylan helps him break free of his guilt. Kio, the cat, is hilarious and I often forget he was even a cat. Leli wasn’t in the book as much as the others, but she was a loyal friend and strong woman. She knew the dangers of helping Dylan and Tyjinn, and it didn’t stop her from giving her assistance. The other Oligarchs were interesting and I would love to read about their back stories. This book is perfect for any adventure lover. Yes the characters are young, but the story is beautifully written and very vivid in detail. I could picture everything happening in the book.
Really enjoyable YA fantasy. Bell is a great writer--I wouldn't qualify his style as "simple," but uncluttered and unburdened, easy to read and imagine, nice flow. He's very adept at creating believable, balanced characters, and writes both younger and older voices well. (You know sometimes when an adult writer writes from a child or teen perspective and it totally doesn't sound real? Bell doesn't have that problem.)There are some nice romantic elements included as well. I think for teens, especially LGBT teens, they'll enjoy that angle a lot (since it's not like the YA LGBT fantasy section is over-flowing with options, unfortunately). For parents, the developing romance between the two teen protagonists is the fun, lovey stuff--nothing too saucy and adult, so no need for that worried, awkward face. (If you like fantasy, you'll probably enjoy the book as well, so maybe have a family book group.)(Parents might also dig that the parents of the MCs are solid, stand-up characters that love their kids. This isn't an angst-fest about sexuality and being rejected by your family. It's an adventure story abut personal growth, building confidence, and love. Very positive.)Good world-building, wonderful dialogue, and both the main characters and background characters felt real and fleshed out. There are also some nice, darker conflicts of the heart--about regrets for past actions, etc. That angle reminded me a little of Miyuki Miyabe's fantasy opus Brave Story, which also included some heavier themes of dealing with anger and abandonment, and the repercussions of our choices. Both this book and Miyabe's are solid YA fantasy reads that include the fun adventure that people are looking for, but slip in those heavier, human elements that are always good to ruminate on and add a lot of depth. If there's a sequel coming, I'm definitely up for reading it. Until then, I recommend this book for anyone looking for a YA fantasy read, and it should definitely be included on LGBT teen library lists. It's too positive of a book to not share it.(Also, for Kindle, it's less than $4. Seriously, for such a good book, that's a steal.)
