Having the Julia Carroll "Collecting Costume Jewelry" series books in your library will absolutely afford you the very best in education about this passionate hobby. Her research is obviously a serious labor of love (I understand she is a former educator which would explain her finely tuned detail on presenting accurately her subject matter). I love "303" as much as "101" and "202", of which I have originals AND the updated versions, generously chocked full of new & valuable info. "303" shines. So many pictures, with great photo details. Great little verbal snapshots of company histories, detailing years of operations, styles most often utilized, hardware, stones and signatures. There are soooo many companies out there besides the biggies, and Julia shows styles that help me to identify unsigned pieces with time frames. The Takahashi section is historically fascinating, and led to her beautiful Takahashi book (Yup, I own that too!) "303" caught me where I am in my collecting journey. A little more detail which I was ready to learn, but still enough juicy pictures to fuel my sparkly obsession. GREAT GREAT GREAT stone primer and "flip side" details in this edition. Come on, Julia, give us "404"!!!!!!!
Very disappointed. Thought that there would be a lot more info on dating jewelry based on clasps/pins. Especially comparing the differences. The info given is mostly for the 1950's, copies of catalog pages from do-it-yourself jewelry suppliers. Not worth the $100 I paid, wouldn't recommend if you're interested in dating your jewelry

I have bought and looked at many vintage jewelry books over the years. The three Julia Carroll books are the only ones I would give 5 stars to. They have easy to see photos and lots of information about lots of companies. Also info about jewelry which is unmarked. I go to these books over and over. Many other books just show photos of jewelry and describe what you are looking at and are full of typos as well, not these!
Probably the most informative book on collecting costume jewelry.
Third book of the series (I love them all), well written and full of interesting tips, maybe a little bit overpriced but overall very useful either for beginners and expert collectors.
A must have for vintage collectors!
This book is an excellent reference guide to pre-70s jewlery. It is not something one would sit down of an afternoon to read, but is helpful when research is needed.
