The text is highly technical and thus somebody with no experience in classical logic will have a harder time finding orientation in it; nevertheless, it was immensely influential for the development of doctrine, especially how Catholic theologians began to re-articulate what tradition meant. Congar and others are unthinkable without Franzelin.
Anyone serious in learning the Catholic Faith & what tradition is should be required to read this book. A fantastic work that we are all in Mediatrix Press’ debt for translating.
It's nice that the translator attempted to make this important work accessible to those without great Latin. However, because the translator does not seem to know theology very deeply he seems to misunderstand what Franzelin is attempting to say. Furthermore, the Latin translation is word for word without a real interpretation of the meaning of the text. The result is English that makes little sense.I would highly encourage the translator to revise this book for publication in a non-vanity press. But he will have to study the thought of Franzelin with greater care. He might start with Kasper's doctoral dissertation on the idea of Tradition in the Roman school.I was surprised to read the enthusiastic preface by Fr. R. Had he read the text?
Not for the faint of heart! This amazing work by the eminent Cardinal Franzelin gives a systematic and detailed teaching on sacred tradition. If you are a theological beginner, this might not be the book for you as Franzelin employs a copious use of very technical Scholastic vocabulary. For the experienced reader, or those with the patience to read and re-read the text, you will be duly rewarded. I was particularly impressed by Franzelin's arguments against Sola Scriptura, and in particular his almost effortless defeat of the Protestant proof-text of 2 Timothy 3:16. He shows that in the Greek the text can't possibly mean what Protestants suggest and does so employing a line of argumentation that I hadn't encountered before. Throughout the book you will be met with insight after insight and a view into the distinctions and categories that round out what Sacred Tradition entails. References to sacred scripture, the Early Church Fathers, and Divine Tradition in all its forms will give you a greater appreciation for the beauty that is the Catholic faith.
