What a strange story! Of course it was an Oprah book, being full of pathos. Well written and not superficial, derivative or shallow. Hard to like most of the characters; sad, broken, lost and some beyond repair. I do wonder how Ruth will turn out. Since it was an Oprah book I think we are supposed to believe that Ruth forges ahead and makes a decent life but she isn't really an admirable person.
Ms. Hamilton is a storyteller comparable to Dickens, Bronte and Shelley. Her foils are not predictable and plots timeless. When you choose to read her book, clear your calendar.
It's book that I need to read twice.I really think that Jane Hamilton did a good job with Ruth's language and her thoughts. She built a perfect character.And I think she did a super job with the relationship between Ruth and her mother.
I truly loved the Book of Ruth
I wonder what Ruth's chances are of changing her life's direction. That she survived the beating shows her inner strength.
Jane Hamilton is one of my favorite writers.
I was not sure where the book was good but I was so surprised by the ending. It’s a slow start but then picks up.
