Okay, there are a number of really cute projects in this book! I have altered the design on the crochet/needle case to suit myself as I have a large collection of vintage and antique crochet hooks--will add a photo when I am done...about 1/2 way there now! The kids booties are adorable! There are many really nice ideas in here that are much like the older patterns that we see from say the late 1800s-1900s in US....very dainty, lacey and feminine style. I AM NOT saying outdated....this is not by any means. I do think the cover shot could have been better since those little jars looks all crooked and weird that way....perhaps something showing the needle case or the scissor case or even the cover for the basket would have been a bit nicer...but still it's not an expensive book and it is WORTH whatever you pay for it. The actual stitch patterns are not anything new...its only how they were used that truly made this book special.
I'll make this review as concise as possible.Pros:1. Nicely laid out with actual pictures of the patterns/projects you will be making.2. Super cute patterns3. Step-by-step directions and illustrations/photos to help you with each projectCons:1. Charts only, no written instructions2. Tutorial pictures are very small3. The terminology used in the book is confusing4. You can probably find these patterns online with clearly written instructionsIf you can read charts and like very cute, lacey crochet projects, this book is for you. As for me, I will be returning it promptly.
I can't even remember when I learned to crochet, I was that young, but in my teens my Norwegian Grandmother taught me to make granny squares and flat circles and sent me out into the world prepared to make anything I saw and liked without ever consulting a pattern. My Swedish Grandmother then gave me an old book she had on crocheted edgings for handkerchiefs. I enjoyed looking at the pictures but that tiny steel hook was daunting.I saw my first crochet chart in this book and realized that I was a visual learner - as another reviewer pointed out, with a chart you can cut to the chase and get the project started. I worked my way through Pattern Lessons 1 and 2, then made a number of projects as small gifts, and finally poached many of the techniques in other projects to, aha, make anything I saw and liked, only smaller.I agree that the lack of guidance regarding thread size or any sort of gauge is a pretty serious flaw here. I can only assume that the term "lace thread" refers to size 10 mercerized cotton most of the time but I see what looks like size 5 perle cotton on a few items. ....sigh...Still and all, there is some fun stuff in here and I may just go back and make something from it. Looking at it again inspires me, and isn't that the point of this sort of book?
Like the title says, it's "lacy" crochet - all thread, all girly, very feminine stuff. It's focused on household items like a sewing case, doilies, basket ribbons, and sachets ... to name a few. I can see how many people would find it to be "fluff" but I absolutely love this book. It's eye candy with beautiful full-color pictures, and it's useful because it shows both the graphs (c'mon, crochet graphs are so much more helpful than wording that changes from one continent to the next) as well as US instructions. The beginning of the book even starts with detailed, beautifully photographed instructions on some crochet techniques. Overall, I haven't a bad thing to say about the book - it's girly, it's beautiful, and there isn't a single project that I don't want to play with.
I bought this off of amazon because the patterns look really cute...and they are. HOwever, I must say that if you are a beginner this is not the book for you. First, they do not tell you what size crochet thread to use, or even what type of material. The book will simply say something like " Lace Thread, Light Blue, 0.1oz (3g)". This really does not mean a lot to me. I am used to reading patterns that say something like "100 yds, size 10, 100% cotton crochet thread". It is even more helpful when books tell you what brand they use, but once again this book does not list this. So, this poses the first challenge. Second there is no gauge. They do let you know what the finished measurement will be, so basically you will have to crochet the whole thing to find out if you are using the right size hook or not. That is a real bummer, and will probably mean a lot of wasted time. Lastly, the patterns are not written like traditional patterns. Traditional crochet patterns will go row by row, with everything abbreviated. These patterns basically break down the pattern into about 3-6 steps, giving you a general overview of the pattern, with you having to go by the chart to actually complete the pattern. If you are not used to crocheting by a chart this might be difficult for you. I feel if they are going to publish a Japanese book in English, they should take the time to go the whole way, and write it in a more traditionally English way. I will say though that the patterns are really cute. Some of the patterns I would like to make that look especially cute to me are: circle coaster, pot holder, tissue box cover, jar covers, round doily, square doily, and the lace basket. I will also note, that the pictures are excellant. I love full color photos, because looking at them gives me inspiration for crochet projects. Something really positive about this book though, is that if you are looking to get into crocheting from Japanese books from Japan, using this as a starting point to see if you can crochet directly from a chart is a good way to go.
Great projects
Everything in this book is adorable and whimsical. I have made the pot holder and the crochet basket. The crochet basket is very practical and beautiful. The pot holder is beautiful, and maybe not so practical. However it makes a beautiful decoration. The instructions are well written and the objects are easy to make. I want to make everything in this book!
